‘Lovers’ Rock’ is a collection of portraits taken in 1977 at the Lewisham Youth Centre, where photographer John Goto taught evening classes. Having remained unseen in his archive for 35 years, these images are an intimate reflection on the relationship between personhood, race and culture against the political upheaval at the time they were taken. The mid-1970s saw Lewisham and New Cross become focal locations for extremist Right wing groups that protested against multi-cultural Britain.
The name ‘Lovers' Rock’ come from a sub-genre of music that grew out of the South London reggae scene; a musical backdrop to the images.
