The story of London's best-known psychiatric hospital, Bethlem, better known as Bedlam, from its medieval foundation to the present day.

The book also looks at how attitudes to madness changed through the centuries, and to what was considered, at different times, to be mental illness. Until the 19th century the inmates were more like prisoners than patients and were badly treated. During the 18th century they were considered to be one of the sights of London, with visitors paying to see them.

A sympathetic and well-researched treatment of a difficult subject.
