This pin is inspired by the toffee hammer brooch in the museum's collection. Toffee hammers were carried by Suffragettes to smash window glass, as they were readily available and could easily be concealed in clothing. Brooches in the shape of toffee hammers were worn to show the wearer had taken part in this activity.

In November 1911, window-smashing become an official policy of the Women's Social and Political Union. Attacks on both government and commercial buildings during 1911 and 1912 resulted in the arrest of over 200 women.

Measures approx. 3cm x 1.2cm.
